WASHINGTON: Trump administration officials in a report on Thursday recommended granting regulators the ability to deny certain imports of nuclear fuel from Russia and China and take other measures to help the struggling US nuclear industry.
The report also recommended that the Department of Commerce extend the Russian Suspension Agreement, which established a maximum cap for imports of Russian uranium to 20% of the US market, “to protect against future uranium dumping.” The suspension agreement expires this year.
US Energy Secretary Dan Brouillette told reporters in a call that the report from the Nuclear Fuel Working Group was a “road map for what we think needs to be done to not only revitalize but re-establish American leadership in this entire industry.”
Brouillette said it was possible that President Donald Trump would release executive orders are some point in the future to support the findings of the report, which also sought to boost research and development into new reactor technologies such as small modular reactors.
