Hyundai: Hyundai utilising Covid-19 lockdown to finalise upcoming cars


NEW DELHI: When it comes to automakers leading the charge in fight against Covid-19, Hyundai Motor India has been proactive in supporting governments in more ways than one. Hyundai is also making full use of the lockdown to finalise the products in the pipeline, a top company official said on Saturday.

From helping its employees to the governments, Hyundai Motor India has chosen a 360-degree approach to fight Covid-19. Apart from donating to PM CARES Fund and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Public Relied Fund, Hyundai has also handed over 25,000 advanced Covid-19 diagnostic kits imported from South Korea.

The company has also provided PPEs, masks and safety kits to healthcare workers, HMIL said in a statement. Hyundai and Air Liquide Medical Systems jointly will augment the production and supply of ventilators in Tamil Nadu and other states.

“Ventilators are critical in this battle against Covid-19 and to enhance the supply of these crucial devices in India, Hyundai has partnered with Air Liquide Medical Systems. We will work together to ensure a steady supply of ventilators and continue supporting the government with a series of initiatives that strive for the betterment of society. The aim is to produce 1,000 ventilators a month,” said Ganesh Mani, head of production of HMIL.

Along with ventilators, Hyundai is also augmenting the supply of ventilators and other respiratory aids like the in-house developed Ambu Bag actuator, Mani added.

Coronavirus has resulted into curtains for factories. The auto industry, which is highly labour-oriented, has faced the wrath of the virus. Hyundai Motor India, however, has been optimistic and is trying to strategy future planning during the work from home period.

“It’s a huge learning opportunity for everyone in the company. Except car manufacturing, all other processes are under way. Importantly, HMIL is spending significant time behind new models in the pipeline. Being a socially responsible company with a global footprint, HMIL is communicating with the employees regaularly and informing them about the importance of social distancing,” Mani said.

The company launched the 2020 facelift Creta ahead of the lockdown and has silently updated the Verna and Venue with BS6-compliant engines. With BS6 Grand i20 and facelift Tuscon among the flurry of cars waiting in the queue, Hyundai is expected to go all-out once the coronavirus scare subsides.

Hyundai Motor India recently announced pan-India coverage of its ‘Click to Buy’ online sales platform. “The response in terms of site visits and page views have been encouraging. However, the exact sales through the ‘Click to Buy’ programme is yet to be ascertained,” another top HMIL official said.
